Need a ittle help for Facebook login please...

I just downloaded Nearforums (thanks for a great forum app!) and am in the process of customizing my forums. When I created this I did not yet have a FB Developer account set up, so reading that I could add the FB login later I went ahead with the installation. Now I need to know where to insert my FB ID Info - I know it states in the instructions:

"Once you have a application id and application secret, copy them to the Site.config file in the folder <... site root...>/Config/Site.config."

But when I downloaded the Sample Template and un-zipped the files, I don't see a site.config file anywhere. Could you please tell me where this file is located so that I can add my FB Id Info to it?

TIA

Ah Ha! Okay, found it. I am using Visual Studio on my local host to do my editing/formatting of the template, so in the files for the template there is no site.config file. Since I installed this directly to the server using the Microsoft Web App Gallery, I had none of the files on my local host server. So I went to my file manager on the server and found the file. For anyone else who is using their local host to edit the forums, you have to download the files to your local host. The site.config file is in the wwwroot/config directory. Hope this helps any one who might have this problem. :-)

Okay, I got the template working correctly on my localhost in Visual Studio (VS2010) and I was able to FTP the updated template and the image and CSS files to my test website. However, when I open the template, it doesn't have any forum attributes.

I.e., it just opens the template and there is no way for me to create a new forum, login or do any of the things that you should be able to do at the start-up of the Nearforums. Can someone please let me know what I am missing? Are there more detailed instructions on how to upload/re-install the template? I admit, I did not re-zip the entire template package, I simply FTP'd the files that I changed/needed up to my test website. Shouldn't that work? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. TIA,

Hi Coleen,

The way you should be working with Nearforums templates is detailed in the documentation:

  • Export the template you want to adapt.
  • Unpack (unzip) on your machine and edit the files.
  • Pack (zip) all the files.
  • Upload back to the server

Hope it helps,

Kind Regards,

jorge

Hi Jorge. thanks again for responding - you're awesome!

I made all the changes to the files in the zip package, but I guess I'm a little confused on re-uploading the zip-file. First, where am I supposed to upload it, and what name should I use to upload it as?

What I did was to change all the files that I needed, i.e.; the template.html, the style.css file and uploaded my image directly into the folders on my server via FTP. Does that make a difference? I mean uploading only the files that were changed directly to the server *should* work the same as uploading a zip file and overwriting the existing files shouldn't it? If not, then if you can let me know in a little more detail what to name the zip file and where it needs to be uploaded, it would be appreciated.

Thanks again for all your assistance, it is greatly appreciated. :-)

I tried uploading the zip file using the "Add Template" page, I included all the files that were in the original zip file, and the ones that I have updated, as well as on for the new License page. When I tried to upload the new zip file I got this error: "File format is invalid. Please include only the allowed files." The zip file includes:

Template.html (the new one I have updated), screenshot.png, license.txt, License.htm (the instructions say to include any new files, so I did because I wanted a separate page to open for the license - should I remove this file?) and the entire template-contents sub-directory which includes all of the original files, the updated .css and the image file for my logo. Can you please give me some insight as to what I am doing wrong? TIA,

Yes, only include files that are detailed in the documentation: remove the License.htm file.

In any case, including a html file inside the template package will NOT create a page. There is a way to create content pages within the Admin Dashboard.

Kind Regards,

Jorge

Thanks Jorge, I'll try that right now. I appreciate your help. :-)

Update - I get the same exact message - even after deleting the License.html file from the zipped files. The only other additional file is my logo, which is a new image file - do I have to name my image file logo?

Okay - I replaced the logo.png with my logo (renamed it) and it seems to be working correctly now. Only 1 thing - I'm trying to get the logo and header text to align center - the text should lie over the top of the logo, but for some reason none of the centering commands I use i my css or in my HTML are working. I.e.,

<div id="header">
            {-headercontent-}
            <center>
            <div id="logo"><img src="template-contents/logo.png" alt="logo" style="text-align:center" />
            <p style=" position:relative; top:-60px; font-size:1.75em; z-index:100;
                font-family: Segoe Script, Lucida handwriting, brush script mt, Script MT Bold, monotype cosira, Apple Chancery, comic Sans MS Italic;
                color: #0200a1;">My text here</p>
            </div>
            </center>
        </div>

The text centers just fine but the logo doesn't. Any suggestions? This HTML works perfectly in my website so I presume it should work in the template. (and as you can see above this works fine here as well)

Thanks again for your help, it is much appreciated.
