Should tags be mandatory?

I'm getting few users complain about what "tags" are and why it is mandatory.

I have updated the text and comment to make it more self explanatory, but I'm just curious as to why they are an mandatory field?

Can anyone give insight?

Hi,
As it was conceived in the first place, it is was the only way to organize topics within a forum. For example, if you have a automotive forum (forum in the Nearforums definition) you could have different tags like "vans" "supercars" or a brand "kia", ... It is also to provide "related topics", that could be useful for the user and SEO.

I think it is a good feature but it would be nice also to have them optional (by configuration), specially for forum owners migrating to Nearforums from a "non-tag" forum.

Yea, I like the feature but we have some non-tech savvy users (For example: One asked how to put google on her tablet)

I'll see if I can make it easily configurable to be able to turn off tags by configuration.

(As a "quick win", we can set it to a default tag like "help" or "discussion")

I already made it non-mandatory for my local copy, the hard part will be making toggle by configuration as it class attribute.
